He faults the early Christian writers with refusing to "assume towards the Hebrew creation tales" the critical attitude of Hecataeus toward Greek mythology, as though there were not an immense difference between the two, whence he concludes that for the Fathers, "if the obvious content of the inspired statement was preposterous and unbelievable, some hidden or inner meaning must be found, and, in response to this necessity, allegory and symbolism replaced candor and critical analysis as the foundations of historical method."

I leave this branch of the German discussion on the periphery of this essay because Maier’s work is familiar in English and I have already offered my assessment of it in JETS 22/1 (March 1979) 79–85.

After the Council of Chalcedon in 451, the Syrian churches broke into followers of Nestorius in the east and the monophysite Jacobites of the west. We raise the question of how “the Church” should view this book’s arguments. Then as now, the very foundations of the faith were perceived to be threatened.

In reference to what Heinrich Heine once called "the portable fatherland of the Jew," the Torah was historicized, secularized, and fragmentized. Their impertinent humor, streetwise manner, and provocative parodies of masculinity brought them enormous popular success—and the condemnation of critics, cultural commentators, and even women's rights campaigners. It is interesting to note that Diego loved and encouraged Frida to dress in the native style that was in en vogue at this time.
